Angst

A small collection of poems that encompass the feelings of longing, heartbreak, and love through the mind of a teenage girl. These poems reflect the author’s deepest thoughts and desires as she navigates her teenaged experience. It’s a look into the mind of a girl who felt too deeply.

Thought Process

The author was unsure of what direction she wished to go with this cover, so she gave me free reign in designing something that fit the tone her of her work.

I gathered inspiration from the imagery the poems brought forth, allowing my mind to explore many different variations in design and color. The poems are romantic and sad, you want to scoop the writer into a bear hug.

Cover No. 1

Multiple poems speak of a numbness the author feels. To visualize this, I drew a hand reaching out as it freezes over on an icy blue background. It’s a cry for help as you fade away.

Cover No. 2

One poem in particular, Dreams, describes a nightmare where the author has fallen out of a velvet case that she has put herself in. She is falling to her death, unable to escape. This cover provides a more literal interpretation of the poem in a graphic and striking style.

Cover No. 3

This book describes a transitional stage of life. The staircase in this cover shows a liminal space, representing that feeling of moving forward. Multiple poems use wildflowers as a metaphor for the author. I used a more cool-toned palette to give the piece a more melancholy feel, while the picture itself is more hopeful.

Cover No. 4 - Author’s Choice

This last cover is the one that the author chose. In it I’ve drawn a simple representation of wildflowers, again a metaphor for the author, that are being grasped. The bright yellow background are the sunrays that come up throughout the book. This cover is the most hopeful of the bunch. While still lonely, the warm palette and familiar line-drawn style show that this period of raw emotion in the author’s life has a happy ending.
